The National animal of India is the magnificent creature called The Bengal Tiger. The scientific name of the Bengal Tiger is "Tiger Panthera tigris". This tiger is a rich-coloured well-striped animal with a short coat. The combination of grace, strength, agility and enormous power has earned the tiger great respect and high esteem. It is found throughout the country except the north-western region, and also in the neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The tiger occupies a variety of habitats from dry open jungles, humid ever-green forests to mangrove swamps.

The Tiger was chosen as the National animal of India due to its grace, strength, agility and enormous power.
Due to illegal hunting for their skins there has been a steep fall of Tiger population in the world. It got bad enough that the Indian government started a project to preserve the tiger population in the world. This project is called "Project Tiger" and was launched in 1973. Under the project 23 reserves were established throughout the country for tigers.
As of 2008 the population of wild Bengal tigers in the Indian subcontinent is estimated to be between 1,300 and 1,500. Of these, 1,411 are found in the wild in India.
